Live Well in Later Life

Greater Manchester is investing £4.8m of funding to help older people live well in their communities.

The pioneering Live Well in Later Life programme strengthens support for older people near to where they live, an approach that is already having a positive impact across the city region.   It will deliver on Greater Manchester’s Age-friendly Strategy and the Greater Manchester Strategy’s commitment to Everyday Support in Every Neighbourhood.

Learning from the Ageing in Place Pathfinder (2022-2025) Live Well in Later Life is growing and spreading the learning from the Ageing in Place Pathfinder.

“By 2030, we will support our older residents to thrive by ensuring everyone can access simple, practical everyday support in their local area through the Live Well in Later Life programme. We will continue to involve our older residents in our decision making, working with our well-established networks and community groups that know their residents best, in order to meet the needs of older people who may be experiencing health, social and economic inequalities.”   Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester

Ageing in Place Pathfinder successes

This work builds on learning from the Ageing in Place Pathfinder programme in Ridge Hill. Through this work:

  • Over 400 people aged 50+ were engaged
  • More than £50,000 was generated to support local activity
  • Strong partnerships were developed across community, housing and health
  • New community-led activities and opportunities were created

The key learning is simple:

  • When communities are supported and involved, better outcomes follow.
  • We are now using this learning to shape Live Well in Later Life across Tameside.
  • Bringing Health and Support Closer to Home

What does Live Well in Later Life aim to achieve?

The project will be based on the same three questions used for Ageing in Place –

  • What’s it like to live here?
  • How could we make it better?
  • How can we work together?

Who is eligible?

We would like to hear from anyone over the age of 50 who lives in Dukinfield/Staybridge and would like to find out more, have their say and help make the area a better place to live and grow older.

How can I get involved in Dukinfield Stalybridge?

Live Well in Later Life is now being developed in the Dukinfield-Stalybridge ward of Tameside, building on the success of Ridge Hill.

In this area, we will:

  • Work directly with residents to understand what matters most
  • Engage with community groups and local organisations
  • Build partnerships across housing, health and the voluntary sector
  • Develop local opportunities that support people to live well

This work will be shaped by local people, for local people.

There are a number of ways to get involved in Live Well in Later Life:

  • Take part in local activities and groups
  • Share your views and help shape what happens next
  • Become a Community Champion
  • Work with us as a partner organisation

We are particularly keen to hear from people who may not usually get involved, so that this work reflects the needs of the whole community.

How It Works

Live Well in Later Life is built around three core elements:

Community Engagement

Listening to residents and understanding what helps people live well in their community.

Community & Health Champions

Supporting local people to take an active role in their community and help others access support.

Partnership Working

Bringing together organisations across health, housing and the voluntary sector to work in a more connected and preventative way.
